What is difference between applied-physics and physics?

I am currently doing Applied physics in College. In my particular college, applied physics is coursework based, there are no exams whereas for Physics, there are.Applied physics, at my college, involves a lot of practical work and stems into fields of Biology and Chemistry alongside Physics, focusing on all three for a first year during a National Diploma course, and only physics during the second year.Generally, Applied Physics refers to the use of physics; how it is used in various fields eg engineering. Whereas, Physics or sometimes called Pure Physics can be more theoretical, new research, new areas to explore. The work being done at CERN in Europe, the large hadron collider where atomic particles are being collided would be Physics. The two fields will largely overlap and the discoveries made in Physics will leak into Applied Physics.

Does air traffic control fall under the applied physics category or pure physics?

Of the two choices given in the question the answer is applied physics. An example of pure physics is using cyclotrons to study particle collisions, or trying to detect neutrinos etc. However, Air Traffic Control (ATC) falls under a multidisciplinary realm the FAA, a federal government agency so there is a political process as well as applied physics. The applied physic can be broken down into several diffeent fields of engineering all of which must form a reinforcing system to keep passengers, crew, pilots etc safe. How do you differentiate pure physics from applied physics?

Pure physics is the realm of the imagination: it is the mathematics of the universe, the theories behind how and why things are the way they are. Applied physics is the science of the real world: generating and distributing energy to our homes and businesses, calculating the effect of friction on machines, analyzing what makes a baseball curve. Often what starts as pure physics finds its way into daily application. For example, the fact that light has a fixed maximum speed is pure physics. Using that knowledge to measure the timing of radio echoes from specific satellites, to determine exactly where on Earth we are (the principle behind GPS), brings that squarely into the realm of applied physics.
