The price of a postage stamp was dependent on the face value of the stamp. The most common rate stamp is for First Class Mail. In the United States 1973 that was 8 cents for the first ounce.

The cost of a first class stamp in 1973 was 8 cents. For a postcard it was 6 cents. It stayed at that rate until March of 1974 when it went to 10 cents.
