Could the heart function without an artery? |
[Edit] |
Answer
The answer could br yes and no. Let me explained. You have 3 main arteries on the heart (Left anterior descending, circumflex and the right coronary artery) that supply oxygen to the heart itself. If one of these arteries becomes blocked over a long period of time, the heart can "grow" arteries to the area of blockage to reestablish blood flow (this is called having collateral flow). It is possible that if one of the arteries closes abruptly, sudden death is possible.
There are 3 ways of maintaining blood flow or reestablishing flow, (1) medications, (2) balloon angioplasty and (3) Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting or open heart surgery.
