Popular symptoms of type 1 diabetes are as follows:-

  • Smelling of pear drops or other sweet things
  • excessive need to urinate
  • excessive thirst
  • dry lips
  • tiredness
  • weight loss or loss of muscle bulk
  • blurred vision ( this is caused by the excessive amount of sugar which affects your eye sight and poor circulation)
  • cramps
  • skin infections
  • thrush
  • mouth ulcers

If you are experiencing any of these don't jump to conclusions because you'll worry yourself even more make sure you go to your nearest doctor if your worried about anything, better to be safe than sorry. Getting diagnosed with Diabetes is not an easy task, been there myself, it will be an emotional roller coaster so if your diagnosed with this i wish all the best.

Yes. In fact Type 1 diabetes was originally often referred to as "Juvenile diabetes" because it was usually diagnosed in children. It has been diagnosed even in infants so it is definitely possible to have type 1 diabetes at 13. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes in most cases is not certain but is believed to be a combination of genetics and environmental factors - possibly triggered by some virus, possibly by exposure to some particular chemical. There are some rodenticices known to cause type 1 diabetes and some chemo-therapies for pancreatic cancer are known to cause type 1 diabetes (which is certainly a lesser-evil compared to cancer).

Teens can also develop type 2 diabetes but the contributing factors are much better known than for type 1 - particularly the diet and lifestyle factors, although genetics play a part in how likely the diet and lifestyle are to lead to diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is most likely to affect kids who are:

  • Girls
  • Overweight (lifestyle)
  • Have a family history of diabetes (due to both genetics and shared lifestyle and diet)
  • American Indian, African-American, Asian, or Hispanic/Latino (genetic links)
  • Have a problem called insulin resistance (gentics)

The more of these risk factors a child has, the earlier they are likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
