Impressions on the moon are caused by meteors crashing into it. There are more impressions on the dark side of the moon. We know this from satellite images, but humans can never go there.
There are craters caused by asteroids. There are also low valleys called Maria. Crescent is a phase of the moon visited both while waxing and waning; just before and after the new moon.
