You can investigate fraction in glass using a rectangular glass block. By tracing the rays of light on a piece of paper, you can measure the angles of incidence (i) and refraction (r). If you repeat this process for a range of different angles of incidence, you would find that the sine of the angle of incidence and the sine of the angle of refraction are constant. This ratio is called the refractive index of the material, and is given the letter n.

Some of the light is reflected off the glass at the same angle - in a manner and angle similar to that of a ball deflected off a surface at a similar angle. This is what happens when light reflects from car windows into our faces. Much of the light, however, will penetrate the glass, so that the light source is seen from the other side. Nevertheless, on contact with the glass, the light that penetrates will be refracted (bent) and travel through the glass at a different angle from that of its original contact with the glass; but once having travelled through the glass, it will leave at its original angle of contact. The amount of refraction depends on a number of factors, but especially, on the thickness of the glass and specific angle of contact involved. So, the light bends as it passes through the glass, but leaves at its original angle.

To find the refractive index of a glass block for a particular wavelength of light, shine a beam of light of that wavelength through a material for which the refractive index n1 is known onto the glass block such that the angle between the beam and the block's surface θ1 is between zero and 90 degrees. Measure the angle between the part of the beam that enters the block and the block's surface θ2 and use Snell's law:n2 = n1 cos(θ1) / cos(θ2).Note: Typically Snell's law is expressed in terms of the angle between the beam and the direction normal to the interface and there for sines are used instead of cosines, but the use of cosines allowed the question to be answered without assuming knowledge of the concept "normal" to the interface.
