Answer
The most unforgettable and horrifying ordeal in my life happened when I was in my early 20's. I was painting a Dental Office with other painters and electricians were putting in lights, when one of them caused a short in the electrical system of the building. Fire caught in the walls and quickly spread to the carpeting in the hallways of the building. We had no phone to call for help, but our foreman knew we were there.
We were up 8 stories, there was no emergency exit we could take, so we closed the doors to the office we were painting, and thankfully we had running water so we spashed water on the doors to keep them cool, hoping to slow the progress of the fire so that it wouldn't get past the door before the Fire Department arrived. There was one window. I looked out the window thinking that if the flames made it to where I was, I was going to try to jump to a building about 80 feet down and off to the side a bit.
Smoke started coming into the Dental Office, we took our painting over-alls off and wet them but with little help. Fire was starting to come under the door and that window was starting to look mighty good.
We were as far into the inner office as we could get when I heard voices. Then we saw water splashing under the door way. The Fire Department had arrived and in force. We were saved a horrible death, but from that day, I have never gone back to that building.
