Collision boundaries are two plates colliding at each other creating a subduction zone. The heavier/slower plate dives 20-60 degrees down from the surface and the lighter/faster plate is crushed and forms folded mountains along the boundary.

Also known as convergent boundaries, these form when two tectonic plates are moving toward each other. These are also known as destructive boundaries because no new crust is being made, and in certain convergent boundaries, the more dense plate is subducted under the less dense plate and eventually becomes part of the mantle.

In plate tectonics a collision boundary is a destructive boundary. In general the light continental crust is squashed and thickens which forms mountain ranges. Oceanic plate being denser is taken back down into the mantle in a subduction zone which results in a deep oceanic trench being formed and volcanic activity forming above the sub-ducted plate as an island arc. Volcanoes can also push up though the the continental mountains if the subducting oceanic plate is pushed beneath a continent.

What is an example of a collision zone?

An example of an collision zone would be types of fold mountains such as the Himalayas.

How is a mountain form?

By the means of plate tectonics at a zone of collision fold mountains are formed. At a zone of collision two continental plates collide and since they are of equal densities no subduction will take place but the two will collide and crumble and fold to form fold mountains.

At a destructive plate margin what determines whether a subduction zone or collision zone is formed?

If two cont. crusts collide then you get a collision zone. If cont. crust collides with oceanic crust then you get a subduction zone.

What plate collision would most likely happen in a subduction zone?

A subductive collision.

What is the difference between subduction zone and collision zone destrutive plate margin?

A subduction zone and a collision zone are the same place, a collision just happens earlier, when the crusts of the two plates are interacting. Later, when the crust of one plate is being forced under the crust of another plate into the mantle, it becomes a subduction zone.

Explain how a mountain range can be formed by an oceanic plate and a continental plate?

A mountain range can be formed by the collision of an oceanic plate and a continental plate. This creates a subduction zone which eventually leads to the formation of a range of mountains.
