After Goering was arrested, Hitler questioned whether the cyanide capsules were real or not (he was paranoid in the final hours before his death). So, he broke one open, and spread the capsules contents in Blondie's mouth. The capsules were real, and the dog was dead a few seconds later.
Hitler committed suicide less that 6 hours later, shooting himself in the temple while simultaneously biting down on a cyanide capsule (just in case the gunshot didn't kill him).
