Issue date: 1/25/06 Students across the world, including celebrities like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, are taking advantage of a 75-year-old program established by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The program, called the Independent Study High School and operated by UNL's Office of Extended Education and Outreach, was created to support students who did not have access to high school courses, said school director Tim Ernst. Helping students finish high school coursework, retake classes or experience different curriculum is still its mission today. According to Ernst, there is a wide variety of students who use the program all over the world, including actors, ice skaters, celebrities, gymnasts, home-schooled students and public high school students. ISHS gives them an opportunity to take classes that aren't necessarily offered at their school. A student can also retake a high school class her or she has failed without falling behind the rest of their classmates. Students can even get their high school diploma entirely through ISHS. Tricia Akerlund, senior marketing specialist for the extended education office, said ISHS offers more than 100 courses to students in the ninth through 12th grades. According to the school's Web site, http://NebraskaHS.unl.edu, coursework includes English, math, social studies and science. Students choose which courses to take and work through them at their own pace. Courses are available in both online and print formats. They can take as little as five weeks or as long as one year to complete the class, Akerlund said. More than 3,000 students around the world are enrolled in ISHS. Akerlund said ISHS is available in 200 communities in Nebraska alone, and there are probably about 400 students who take advantage of the program. Ernst said more than 200 students graduate from ISHS each year. Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Lance Bass are notable graduates of the program, Akerlund said. They used ISHS to obtain their high school diplomas. The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement recently granted ISHS accreditation for the 2005-2006 school year, according to Ernst. The program has had accreditation since 1978, and Akerlund said this means the program is adhering to academic standards put forth by the commission.
