Garfield and Arthur received 4,446,158 popular votes and 214 electoral votes. Winfield Hancock and his VP running mate received 155 electoral votes and 4,444,260 popular votes. Chester A. Arthur succeeded James Garfield upon the latter's assassination in September 1881. Arthur was not nominated as a presidential candidate in the 1884 presidential election.
