Washington did not wear a wig. Even though wigs were fashionable, Washington kept his own hair, which he wore long and tied back in a queue, or ponytail. He did, however, powder his hair as was the custom of the time. His powdered hair is what you see in the portraits.

Wig wearing was a custom of the time
Men wore wigs in the 1700's because that is what the fashion/style for them to wear. Washington was a very tall man with red hair and some historians state he didn't like the color of his hair. He seems to have been very self conscience about his appearance and looks. One report is that he refused to shake hands because he felt his hands were too big. But, in wearing the wig he was just going along with the times and and what men wore. Just like people do today.

yes along with almost richer men or public servers because women wore flowers as perfume and men wore powerderd wiggs to mask their scent some
