Mary I (1516 - 1558) nicknamed "Bloody Mary" for her persecution of Protestants during her reign, was the daughter of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536).
She became Queen of England in 1553 after the death of her half-brother Edward VI at the age of 15 and the removal and execution of the upstart Lady Jane Grey, the nine-days-queen.
