People didn't have surnames them. It was, however, common to use the patronymic (the father's name) or the town of origin in addition to the person's name. Jesus might have at time been called "" Y'shua bar Joseph (Jesus, son of Joseph) or "Jesus of Nazareth."

So, elsewhere in the New Testament, "Judas Iscariot" is "Judas of Kerioth"; "Mary Magdalene" is "Mary of Magdala"; and "Simon bar-Jona" is "Simon son of John."

Jesus would have been known as "The son of Joseph of Nazareth" because he was the step-son or 'son-in-law' of Joseph who had responsibility for Jesus as legal guardian. Hence Jesus' statement to Joseph and Mary at the Temple in His 12th year: "I must be about MY Father's business". Jesus was also known as "Jesus of Nazareth". These are titles combining a first-name with a place or profession. That's how 'last names' or 'surnames' came into being.

As "Jesus of Nazareth", Jesus' 'surname' (i.e., "of Nazareth") is interesting because in Hebrew it is "Eth Nazar" or "The Branch". That was a traditional messianic title. Nazareth was near or on the border of tribal lands "Naphtali and Zebulun". These are recorded in Isaiah 9 as "having seen a great light" after a period of deep darkness. In 722 BC, these regions were virtually obliterated by the Assyrian army from Iraq (Ninevah). In circa 3 BC, after Herod's death, Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth from Egypt. The Herodians were trying to kill Jesus so Mary and Joseph decided to live outside their areas of control, hence in Nazareth. In that way the town was to "see its great light". Thus, whether knowingly or unknowingly, Joseph and Mary fulfilled old prophecies in Isaiah by taking Jesus to live in Nazareth. "Jesus of Nazareth" is as close as one can get to having a surname or "last name". Inadvertently, it would seem at first glance, Jesus got a surname meaning "Jesus The Branch". One could not get a much more messianic surname than that ("Jesus The Christ" excepted as the above answer correctly implies).

There is another side-issue to this question. How will The Antichrist be named? Will he have a name like Joshua of Rome, Nero Caesar, Julius of Satan, etc., etc? Jesus of Nazareth is "The Christ" or Messiah or Anointed One. What is, or will be, the name of "The Anti-Christ? This is important because the Book of Revelation says "the number of his name" will add to six hundred and sixty-six. This can only be calculated by taking his first and surnames, transliterating the Latin letters of this name (for he must be Roman) into Hebrew and counting the value of those Hebrew letters to arrive at a total. If that total is 666, then another important criterion for identifying "The Antichrist" is established. The fact that Israel is being prepared to sign an international treaty to ensure its legitimacy in this "21st" century, is a third important criterion needed to identify "The Antichrist". For, according to The Bible, only Antichrist is able to have the power and influence to negotiate this treaty. And he needs an Israeli state to exist for that purpose.

In conclusion, the issue of the last name of either Jesus the Christ or the antichrist, whoever he is, is actually a very important question. Actually, we do have a name for a modern Roman child whose name adds to 666. Furthermore the name given to him by his mother and the surname we expect he might adopt make interesting reading. Essentially, the name of this candidatereads like "Majesty - King of Kings" (or perhaps 'King and King'). Only Jesus can legally and morally make that claim (King of Kings). The Antichrist will usurp the title (or surname). At the moment, as far as we know, the candidate we are observing has not officially adopted the surname of his step-father. For that reason, and to ensure the child's security should he not be the "Antichrist", it is most unwise to give much detail at the moment. However, the terribly wicked things going on in the world: from whomever is supporting North Korea to the wars and destitution in Africa; from the freewheeling porn industry on the internet to the designers of the monetary system's collapse; are virtual proof that the Antichrist is alive and with us; or, very, very near to arriving in this world. That's why everyone is being urged to get themselves 'right with God' through His only begotten son - Jesus of Nazareth.

Jews of the first century did not have last names, and this includes Jesus as well as Mary and Joseph. 'Christ' simply means 'anointed' and indicates the belief that Jesus was the long hoped-for Jewish Messiah.

Last name of Joseph father of Jesus the Christ?

They did not use last names as we think of them. They used the place that they were from or what family lineage they came from as a way to tell them apart. Jesus was called Jesus of Nazareth. Nazareth was the town that he was raised in. Joseph would be the same way. In the bible Joseph was refered to as Joseph son of David. This was because he was a desendant of King David.

Why does Mary Magdalene have a last name?

No one had last names as we know them in those days. Occasionally people were known by two or more first names - as examples John/Mark (who wrote Marks gospel), Peter/Simon, Paul/Saul, and even Jesus/Emmanuel. If there were two or more people in an area who had the same name, to differentiate between them, a characteristic, or ancestor, or district from where they came was used. As an example, James, the brother of John and James son of Alphaeus were both disciples, as were Simon (also called Peter) and Simon the Zealot, and Judas and Judas Iscariot (Judas from Iscaria) - the one who betrayed Jesus. In the case of Mary Magdalene, there are several Marys in the stories of Jesus. There is Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary of Bethany (who was the sister of Martha and brother of Lazarus), and Mary Magdalene. 'Magdalene' simply means 'from Magdala' a village near Jerusalem, and hence she could be called 'Mary of Magdala' which means the same thing. Therefore 'Magdalene' is not a 'surname' but a description of Mary to differentiate her from the others in the stories of Jesus. There are about 6 different 'Mary's' mentioned in the Gospels -it was a popular name - so nicknames were used to differentiate them.

What is the last name of Mary the mother of Jesus?

Mary the mother of Jesus was not known as having a last name. These were not widely used until much later, although some people did use means of differentiating themselves from others, sometimes by their employment such as Simon the Tanner. or by descent such as James and John the Sons of Zebedee. Mary would have been initially known as the wife of Joseph and later as the mother of Jesus (possibly after Joseph's death). The above answer is incorrect in the middle east as in Africa your last name is your father's first name and that is how they were able to clearly keep the lineage going...i.e Jesus (Yahshua) name would be Yahshua bar Ysef (Joseph) etc. So if Mary who's real name was (Mariam) father's name was, Boaz for example, her name would have been Mariam bar Boaz. This is how we have the exact order of lineage, NOT LIKE THE EUROPEANS DO.The above answer is ALMOST correct. The only issue with it is that Joseph was not Jesus' father.
