Yes He did die on the cross for real. He lost lots of blood from the whippings He got with the cat-o-nine tails. After that He was nailed to the cross for hours where he bled to death from the nails in His hands and feet. A final assurance of His death on the cross was when they drove a spear into His heart to make sure He was dead. If anything, the spear confirms His death on the cross.
