He was born there. He was to be born in his father's hometown, Nazereth, but could not, because of King Herod's decree to kill him. His parents moved his birth place to Bethlehem. According to the Biblical record Jesus was born in Bethlehem due to the census decree made by Augustus. (It would not be possible or plausible for a murder decree to have been issued by Herod before Jesus was born and before the Magi from the East had made his birth known, nor would the baby Jesus himself have had any input into these matters)
Luke's Gospel, in its nativity account, says that when Mary's time for purification had finished, the young family travelled to Jerusalem to present Jesus at the Temple, then travelled home to Nazareth in Galilee. They returned to Jerusalem each year for the Passover, but Bethlehem was out of the way and there is no suggestion that the family ever took Jesus there again.
Matthew's Gospel, in its nativity account, says that Bethlehem, not Nazareth, was the hole town of Mary and Joseph. They continued to live there after the birth of Jesus until Jospeh was warned in a dream that Herod intended to have Jesus killed, upon which they fled to Egypt. After Herod's death they began the return journey but, before they reached Bethlehem, Herod was again warned in a dream and so they turned aside and travelled to a new home in Nazareth in Galilee instead.
None of the gospels mentions Jesus going to Bethlehem during the time of his mission.
The Gospel of Matthew says that Mary, Joseph and Jesus fled from Bethlehem to Egypt for fear of King Herod, who wished to have Jesus killed. They remained in Egypt, probably for several years, until the death of Herod. They then began the return journey to their home in Bethlehem but, being warned in a dream, turned aside and travelled to Nazareth in Galilee instead. Once in Galilee, they would have feared to travel to Judea. In this account, the young family would certainly not have returned to Bethlehem.
The gospels all seem to provide a full account of the later mission of Jesus, with no record of his ever returning to Bethlehem.
