Repeatedly. He kept saying "we've only one rule" and then telling Dagny of another one. Or he didn't believe in giving his enemies the products of his mind - but then told his torturers how to fix the machine.

Yes, in a sense. He was a fictional character in the bestselling philosophical novel "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. He was described as the "Head of State", a position equivalent to that of "President". He tried to persuade John Galt to help the government, even threatening torture - though he didn't actually wish to come out and say so. He later presumably perished in the riots and breakdown of civil order in New York City.

It was Ayn Rand who in her book, "Atlas Shrugged", had various characters say in essence, "By the nature of the universe, contradictions can't exist. If you think see one, check your premises. You'll find one is wrong." The characters of Francisco D'Anconia, Hugh Akston and John Galt were the ones who spoke on this.

Did Dagny Taggart betray Eddie Willers by not telling him where Galt's Gulch was in 'Atlas Shrugged'?

She does not tell him because she did not know the exact location herself, so that would not be betrayal. Another view: Of course it was a betrayal. She knew how to get in contact with the men of the valley, most especially John Galt. If nothing else, she could have told the men of the valley about Eddie, so they could go get him.

What is Atlas Shrugged about?

Ayn Rand's classic dystopian novel "Atlas Shrugged" is about a society very much like ours today in which the productive people in society - the few people who invent things, start businesses, and develop new and more productive ways of doing things - are being more and more hampered and taxed in their ability to manage their businesses, and the consumptive class - the politicians, bureaucrats and "moochers" of society - demand more and more effort from the productive few. Figuratively in the story, Atlas, the Greek demigod who carried the world on his shoulders is weary. Atlas shrugs, and drops the world from his shoulders and is freed of his burden. In the novel, the opening line is the recurring question "Who is John Galt?" The inventor John Galt, tired of being taken advantage of, organizes a "strike" of the productive few, and watches civilization collapse around him. It is a fascinating story, well told (except for a 100-page monologue of John Galt's speech, which drags on even by Randian standards) which has become eerily prescient in its depiction of our collapsing civilization. So even though the novel is over 50 years old, it has received intense new interest as a "libertarian anthem". A new movie of "Atlas Shrugged" is currently in production, and should be released in 2011.
