Yes, Gaius Julius Caesar was a real person. He was the person who evolved the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire and arguably, one of the most influential figures in all of history. If it wasn't for him, the world would be a totally different place. His adopted son became Augustus Caesar after Julius Caesar was assinated by thirteen members of the roman senate.

No, he did not. He was made up by Shakespeare. There is no fossil evidence of him; it just a myth that is carried on by centuries. For all that we know, there is no proof of his existence.

EDIT: Whoever wrote this above me has no knowledge of history or is a retard, possibly both. There are loads of evidence that point to the existence of Julius Caesar, including his own writings and the writings of his contemporaries. They are also ancient coins from his time and statues that show his actual face and name. Every credible historian from Caesar's time and afterwords (like Plutarch, Livy, and Suetonius) documented his existence. Shakespeare actually used Plutarch's writing of Julius Caesar for his play, he was most certainly real.

No, his father was a Caesar also; both were members of the Julii Caesares.

The name 'Caesar' as referring to an emperor was used in the reign of the Emperor Claudius and all the Emperors that followed. It was in the reign of Claudius that the term 'Caesar' was used as a title rather than a family name, and Julius Caesar was never an emperor (only a dictator, which in Roman terms was not always a bad thing).
