Did Mary 1 deserve the name Bloody Mary? In: Famous People |
[Edit] |
if you look at how many people she actually had put to death in comparison to her contemporary monarchs on the continent or even in Scotland (they had hundreds of thousands put to death). History is written by the victors and that was quite obviously the Protestants in this case, and they were desperate to rid themselves of the Catholic threat and so demonised Mary as a evil religious tyrant.
We have this perception of her because the Propaganda of the protestants during her reign and then after it was so strong, in a ratio of aprox. 2:1 with the pro-catholic propaganda (because she didn't have them all executed most were exiled, 800) . Also the Victorian's further embellished her as an evil tyrant to ensure there was historical grounding for "English Liberty, Progress and Empire" they highlighted Mary's reign as an example of the risks of Catholic and authoritarian ruled regimes.
She seems cruel by our modern standards, but by that degree shouldn't we condemn all the Tudors, who freely used the death penalty for other crimes.
Hello? Mary I did deserve the nickname Bloody Mary! She brutally murdered (burned alive) almost 300 martyrs, the only reason being that they disagreed who God was!
