The women were kept in virtual purdah, properly dressed, working in the home and land and raising children. They got out only for an occasional women's religious festival. The exception was Sparta where the women were near-equal, and participated in sports and cultural activities.

No. They didn’t swim. In fact women weren’t allowed to show their bodies in public for centuries. Even as late as the 1900’s in the United States women were arrested on beaches if any skin was shown.
