I don't know if any of them used those precise words but there were those who held that view. Since America had a small population spread over an immense territory there was significant concern about whether it would be possible hold it together and have a sense of national identity. There was fear that the union would split into several pieces each one dominated by some European power. Under those circumstances there was a legitimate argument to be made that Immigration would detract from national unity. Michael Montagne
