Answer
Yes, Dragons lived long ago, but they were hunted to extinction. Dragon's were meat eaters, and both the females and males hunted for food. When human's starting keeping cattle, this made it easier for a dragon to find a meal for itself, and for it's young.
Unfortunately, people did not like dragons making meals out of their live stock. This is the main reason why dragons were hunted to extinction, but not the only reason.
It was once thought to be a very chivalrous thing to do, to hunt down and slay a dragon. Sad though it may be, even baby dragons were found and slain. Many knights seeking to elevate their status, hunted and killed dragons.
Unfortunately, when the hunters entered a dragon's den, and kill a Mother/ Father dragon, they also killed the baby dragon as well. The people that lost much of their live stock taken by dragons, only saw the baby dragon as a future threat. It never occurred to them, that baby dragons would die soon enough without their parents to feed them. Maybe being slain, was better than starving to death, but it did not make it any less cruel.
Dragons were not monsters, as many legends would have us believe. They were simply a just a another creature battling to save their existence. They just wanted to live, breath and eat, and followed their instincts to do so, like any other creature.
A documentary was filmed about the hikers that stumbled onto a unique discovery in the mountains of Romania. Paleontologist found that the hikers had stumbled onto an ice cave, where they found the remains of several knights, and a perfectly preserved dragon. I believe the name of the documentary on the Animal Planet was "A Fantasy made Real".
