Many historians believe that most of the development of horses began in North America. Scientists believe that the first horses (called Pliohippus) to evolve in North America appeared about 6 million years ago. For some unknown reason, horses (Equus) disappeared from the Western Hemisphere and were re-introduced by spanish explorers (after Columbus) in the sixteenth century.
