All the time, routinely. Many Soviet soldiers were very brave, but those whose courage lagged still fought viciously because they were more afraid of their own commanders than the enemy. The Soviets routinely deployed "blocking units" behind front line troops with order to mercilessly kill anyone trying to retreat or run away, and they had better follow those orders. The Soviets made widespread use of punishment units, where those who were guilty of some infraction, or of merely aggravating or being unliked by their superiors, were sent. These units were given suicidal assignments as a matter of course. Men were assigned to these units for perhaps three months as punishment; few survived to return to their regular units. There were even air force "punishment" units. The Soviets had such a large reservoir of manpower that they were able to act as Stalin demanded, with complete disregard for losses, for almost the entire war. Only in the last few months, after losing perhaps twenty million troops, did the Russians begin to have to be at all careful of conserving manpower. Up to that time Russian soldiers would be regularly marched straight through minefields, for instance, on the theory that the Soviets would have lost as many men had the enemy defended the place with machine guns. Any Russian soldier who lived through the war was a very lucky man.

How did they discipline soldiers in the trenches in World War 1?

They disciplined the soldiers in several ways. If the soldiers disobeyed the generals they would be punished either by imprisonment or cashiering. If the soldiers on the front line turned back when they went into on coming bullets, it often ended in death as they were classes as cowards. Discipline in the trenches became hard to maintain, as some soldiers turned to killing their own officers in protest of the conditions. Some French troops mutinied in 1917. Few soldiers could make sense of the continuing conflict.

Do soldiers go to hell for murdering?

Not if the killing is done in a battle or in the line of duty, but they are chargeable if they kill innocent persons who intend them no wrong or if they are on their own time and happen to kill someone in a non related war incident.

How did soldiers in the civil war feel?

They felt terrible. Why? Because when they were fighting, they were killing their own brothers. Metaphorically speaking. Some probably wanted to kill themselves because of them killing people of their own country that were pretty much good.
