The war affected commerce and thus the diet of many nations . Japan being an island-nation saw many of it's citizens starve to death as a result of an effective naval blockade .

Most nations were affected in some way due to essential food-stuffs being dedicated to the war effort . The U.S. rationed sugar and coffee for example(it was the least affected).

The war disrupted the planting and harvesting of grains and the raising of live-stock .
