My goodness, by the time the 1970s came around, the race for space had been in
full bloom, with the lead see-sawing back and forth between the USA and USSR
and back again, for well over a decade.

The race had raged since at least the mid-1950's, and the general public became
aware of it in 1957 when the USSR launched the first successful artificial Earth satellite.

After the popular, well funded, well publicized, politically supported all-out space effort
throughout the 1960s, the US flew the first manned mission to the moon in July, 1969.
