As one of the greatest defeats in American military history, the December 7, 1941, attack by the Japanese upon Pearl Harbor has been much discussed well beyond the end of World War II. In general terms, the consensus of those who have studied the surprise-attack do not think that American authorities were aware of it beforehand. Hostilities of some kind were expected to break out soon, but the American focus was on points much farther west in the Pacific than the Hawaiian Islands.
