Mr. Stubbs does not actually die. After Toby is taken away by Mr. Tupper, the hunter notices Mr. Stubbs is not laying there anymore. After Toby is returned to the circus, he is told to go see Sam whereupon he is reunited with Mr. Stubbs. Apparently the hunter found him and brought him to the circus.
