Islam is a religion. Followers of Islam are called Muslims.

An Islamic country is one where all the civil, economic and social laws as well as faith and customs followed are based strictly on the Islamic guidelines laid down by the Islamic priests and Mullahs. Consumption and sale of Alcohol, idol-worship, local women wearing western clothes etc are officially banned and at times are punishable offences. Also, the Sharia laws are followed religiously. Example : Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman etc.

A Muslim country is where the religious and social customs are based on Islamic values and principles but are not imposed forcibly on its citizens. Customs and practices followed in other religions are respected. Also, modernity or western lifestyle is not considered to be un-Islamic. Social, religious and personal independence of individuals are respected. Basically, in a Muslim country the socio-politico-economic structure is based on a mix of Islam and modern democracy.

Example : Turkey, Malaysia, UAE etc.
