First cousins have the same grandparents, second cousins have the same great grandparents - they are more distantly related. Not to make it more confusing, but 1st and 2nd cousins must also be the same distance from the common ancestor (i.e. grandparent or great-grandparent) or the word 'removed' is used to denote the separation. For example, if John Smith is common ancestor, in this example the grandparent, and he has two sons who each have one daughter, Jane and Julie, then those two girls are 1st cousins, as they have the same number of ancestors between them and John Smith. And if Jane and Julie went on to have children their children would be 2nd cousins to each other. But, if Julie's child's relationship to Jane is that of 1st cousin once removed, because there is a generation between them. It might be useful to use a genealogy chart to map your own family as it gets quite confusing.
