Cache is located on the processor so that it can access what's in there faster. The management system will put things in cache that it thinks you might need next. So if you're looking at one page of a word document, it might decide to put the next page in cache so that you will get it quicker. That's a very very simple example as probably the whole document will fit in cache.

A CPU cache is used by the central processing unit of a computer to reduce the average time to access memory. The cache is a smaller, faster memory which stores copies of the data from the most frequently used main memory locations

(Dynamic) Memory is:

  • Much faster
  • Closer to the CPU (Thus can transfer data to the CPU faster)
  • Expensive (in terms of cost)
  • Usually volatile: All data in memory will be lost when it has no power.
  • Requires a constant(ish) supply of energy.

Secondary storage is:

  • Slower than memory
  • Fairly cheap
  • Non-volatile
  • Only requires power while in use
  • Easier to get large quantities of data

What is the Difference between secondary memory and auxiliary memory?

secondary memory is actually the permanent memory/the backing storage of the computer. it is of two types:sequential accessdirect accessauxiliary memory is the computer's internal/temporary memory. it is also of two types:random access memory (RAM)read only memory (ROM)the difference between secondary memory and auxiliary memory is that:-both are same i.e both performs the same operationsthanks.

What are the similarities between secondary memory and primary memory pdf?

They are both storage devices

What type of memory is found on secondary storage device?

Long term memory is found on secondary storage devices.

Is the secondary storage faster than main memory?

No. The secondary storage is typically slowerthan primary storage. But the secondary storage has higher capacity than primary storage.

What is the function of secondary storage?

Primary memory is the only type of memory directly accessible to the CPU. The CPU continuously reads and executes instructions stored here. Also, any data actively operated on is also stored here.

Difference between backing storage and main memory?

Main memory in a computer is storage that will be erased when a computer is turned off. Backing storage is memory that will save information when the computer shuts down.
