The inspiration of the bible? What is so inspiring about the acts of a selfish god who creates and then destroys for such petty reasons. It is like someone teasing a dog by hanging a big juicy bone above it's nose, and then when the dog grabs the bone, beating it and condemning it's entire species to eternal damnation. Did Adam and Eve know any better? Yes, god did apparently instruct his "children" to not touch from the tree of evil, but we all know how children can be. I'm not going to curse my entire family tree and future generations because my daughter didn't listen when I said not to touch the apple. I shouldn't have left the apple there in the first place if it was to never have been touched. Duh!!

Oh dear, we do seem to get ourselves in a tangle trying to answer questions on religious subjects do we not?

Reading the above answers to the main question seems to indicate that we do not fully understand what the wise prophets of old are trying to tell us.

As a Latter Day Saint I believe the bible to be the word of God in so far as it has been translated correctly. Much has been left out of the original texts, either intentionally or through ignorance of the meaning of certain passages. If we were to read James 1:5; and apply this council in our own lives, then perhaps the meaning of all scripture will be made clear to us and confusion will no longer reign.

Finally, why are so many books missing from the bible? If they had been included they would have gone a long way to improve our understanding. There are at least sixteen writings mentioned in the bible that we have no record of from The Book of Commandment to the Prophecies of Enoch.
