How does a person with a felony find a job after he has served his time? |

- Lets face it, one of the major reasons for a criminal justice system throughout human history is so that the privileged in society can maintain a 'white collar welfare' system for themselves through the operation of government. Its all the same whether you're talking about a monarchy, a dictatorship or a republic which is presented to us in our country as a democracy (but when was the last time you saw a politician exercise the will of the people?)
- Government needs to keep its citizens living in fer so they will vote for more government, and to that end they are perfectly OK with making sure that once ensnared in the trap of the criminal justice system, we will never escape it no matter how hard we try to live righteously and within the law. This is why all of the public databases are being allowed to proliferate without restraint, and why police routinely convict someone in the media even before they're actually ever inside a courtroom. A new identity might have been the answer before 9-11 but now that option is no longer an option. You might have some luck posing as an illegal alien, they seem to be getting plenty of work without any problems. But the bottom line is government, and by extension society doesn't want us to thrive and succeed because if we did there would be less reason for bigger government. About the only way to beat this is to become self employed, using a fictitious business name under the law which cant be easily associated with your own sullied reputation, and avoiding physical addresses in all correspondence and business dealings by using a p.o. box.
- OH, and by the way, your smartphone? Its your enemy. Even a burner cell phone is bad enough inasmuch as it can be tracked somewhat generally. Someone earlier in this thread said leave the country, that might not be a bad idea for those who can. At least the Europeans consider one to be rehabilitated after 10 years. For me it think its going to be an all cash-off the grid life going forward; sure I will keep my ID for getting through "dui" checkpoints and the occasional hotel room/train ticket purchase; but as far as society goes I plan to become a recluse.

- This is a very difficult question and I think all the awnsers are useless. I think the discussion needs to turn to How does one get into another country and make a go nat it, or how does one get ID and convince everyone they are someone else. I say this because in the USA, one of the worlds most evil governments, you will never be forgiver. I know this to be true but I don't know why Americaans are this way. Perhaps their is something wrong in the DNA of the past misfits of Europe who made their way to the new world. One small way to understand where I am comming from is to understand the justice systems in other countrys even the one where reeducation camps were present some of the people who went through thise became world leaders afterwoods. Also look at who really founded the concept of restorative justice, you will find it was American Indians. Belive me being a American is no favor.

- I made a very poor choice to commit a felony. I've been home for seven years after doing 14 years for armed robbery. My luck in finding work has amounted to low wage grunt-work jobs and my 48 year old body is breaking down. I'm currently employed par-time/on-call as a weatherization tech. It's cool when you first come home and any type of job will suffice, but that gets old fast. Most of the jobs in DC are government jobs. As soon as an HR manager see armed robbery my application goes to file 13. So basically I'm confined to pursue only menial jobs. I wanted to go to school for computers, but what's the sense in that when you need to be able to obtain a security clearance. I feel like an Al Qaeda terrorist.

- My conviction and only conviction was when I was 44 yrs old (2/99) - my crime involved no touching nor anything hanouse but it did involve the fact that I did not tell social services that my 2 year old grandson (in which my wife and I were guardians) touched me for one second of time while I was in the bathroom. I did report it to my family to be very cautious around him and that was the end of it. Excep the prosecutor of another jurisdiction wanted to prosecute me as 1st degree sexual asault of a minor. So because he did touch me - undeniable I was convicted, pled no contest without an attorney and spent 45 days in jail and 3 1/2 yrs of probation. during that time there was no public registry. In 2002, when the registry became public I was on it and lost my job. I could not get one job since 2006. I left the state and went to antoher state for work. I worked until 2008 when the occupied state put me on there registry for failure to register even though the state that I was on had my place of residence reported. Since 2008 to current I cant get hired. I have tried over 3,000 applications. Im 55 years old and have absolutely no criminal involvement or record except the incident in 2/99 and still cant get work. I went through college - bus/acctg degree (5 yr program done in 3 yrs) and still no one will even hire me - This system is set up for the eradication of anyone that is on the sex offender's registry and meant as a cash cow for politicians to be reelected into office (WI and FL) I served 14 years in the military and never had any interations with police and I cant get one single person to hire me. No matter how manny hoops I jump through - the state of Florida had a meeting with the Business associations in Florida and they specifically stated - they have policies in place so that anyone with a felony and particularily on the sex offender registry will never be allowed to work in the state of Florida (2009) All I can say is wish you luck. Im 55 years old 20% disabled in both feet, a college grad (2005) Quickbooks and excel certified and cant get a job washing dishes. 14 years of military and 3 years federal service and not one person will give me a break - thank you america

- I am in Texas, and hope some of you find this usefull. First sign up with (TWC) Texas workforce commission. Then sign up for the (WOTC) program. Work opportunity tax Credit This will give the busniss that hires you a $1200-$9000 tax credit for hireing you the Ex-Con. But you can only use this tax credit During the first year of your release. After that you can still sign up for Texas Back to Work program. This will give the employeer a $2000 tax credit for hiring an out of work texan. No conviction needed! This will give you the Ex-Con A much needed $11,000 advantage on the next person. But you must sign up for these. And make the Employeer aware he could save $11,000 By hiring You!

- I have been home for five years after serving fourteen years for armed robbery. Returning to society I was naive to the fact that there are laws in place that unfairly over restrict a felon's employment options. This madness has to stop, however the only way to change this despicable practice is to mobilize. We need numbers to force changes to the status quo. And businesses that will not hire felons I try to boycott them.

- There is a mindset that us convicted felons carry when approaching the job market after release. We have already resolved that our search is going to be fruitless. This is not true, I have held various positons in multiple areas including management. I changed the way i looked at myself first. From all of the mistakes that i made in the past, i personally resolved that those actions were not of my true character. Once i truly embraced this, my attitude and demeanor changed, which gave me confidence when interviewed for various positions. This in turn convinced employers to give me a chance. And in turn i showed my grattitude by going over and beyond the call of duty so that the employer would give the next felon a chance.

- currently ex-offenders can visit our job portal, www.barnonejobs.com/jobs this portal is filled with jobs, but NOT ALL OF THESE JOBS are "felony friendly"
- Our advice to all ex-offenders; if you know you don't qualify for the job ( your background notwithstanding), do not apply for it...
- sex offenders, do not apply for jobs where children are involved
- robbery offenders, do not apply for a bank job...
- etc...

- I live in NYC and here you are a zero to the left if you have a felony...probation officers in special federal are not doing there job. I ask for help, shelter, job, anything and i go harassment or ignored...then when my probation term was completed ...they have the guts to tell me that why i did not use their resources, ha this really got me upset...I have over 3 years looking and looking and the only answer i get is we will call you or sorry...I called the Phoenix and Bronx works..and many others organizations that the sell them self as helping felons, to see if they can give me a helping hand but no luck...Phoenix decline my help and Bronx Work never have open positions...I try Taco Bell McDonald, Bk and many others and just because I mention my conviction that is the end of the interview. In NY State is illegal to discriminate because of your criminal record. But the have methods on how to disqualified you as soon as they know your record. I have not give up yet and don't know how long i can continue. I have two BA earned but no job the industries related to my degree are not willing to hire...and i wasted all my retirement funds just trying to kept my kids health and with shelter...I pray and pray and will continue to pray to see this injustice end...I serve my country with honor and I cant end like this, I cant see myself being homeless..my prayers to all you, God bless you!

- To me if you did your time you should have the opportunity to make a living. Most companies are hiring through temp services and temp services are doing back ground checks. Making finding a job all most impossible. to me society is telling felons to go back and do what you did to get the felon. Also that your life is over, no second chance for this life. And you only have one life. I believe that there should be some law to help felons find jobs. They paid their debt to society, then why are they still being punished. Felons have families to support lives to live with out crime. Felons lets get together and do some about this. this is just another form of discrimination. Society let's not be cruel to your fellow man. Everyone deserve a chance.

- Try this. Go to a trade school where they offer job placement assistance. I know of a trade school called Arc Labs (www.arclabsusa.com) where they train people, even with no experience at all, to do metalworking, welding, other things like that. The pay is really good, some jobs 18-24 dollars an hour. It might be worth looking into because there is a severe shortage of metal-workers around the country. Getting a job is fairly easy in something like that because they can't find people to do it. It only takes 10-weeks to complete the program and when you finish you are certified. There is also financial aid available through the WIA act and also private scholarship funds. Just a thought.
