- As an independent Appraiser, i work for about 25 different insurance companies, and it varies from state to state adn company to company. Pennsylvania is better than jersey, is better than Delaware, etc. Safe auto recently lost a class action suit so now they have to go by the retail value instead of wholesale. You can use any recent major work (not general maintenance) to increase, from new muffler to new or rebuilt engine or trans. custom performance parts are harder. If its your ins co, you have to have a rider, you pay a few dollars more each month to cover you ground kit or fancy paint job. If you are not at fault, and are going through the other persons' ins co, they have to replace your vehicle as it was the second before the accident, stereo, muffler, fiberglass body kit whatever. and again, all major recent maintenance.

- I am an insurance agent in Colorado and it is very rare that I ever here of anyone insured by any company that has a problem with what the insurance company offers them on a totaled vehicle. I have been in the business for 13 years and have several thousand customers. Maybe it's just Colorado.
