The answer to this question must start with the question: What is meant by "The wages of sin are death".

God told Adam and Eve that if they ate of the tree of life, they would die. They ate and they didn't die - physically. (Gen 3:6) Before their sin, they were in perfect communion with God. Afterwards, the were spiritually separated from God. Thus, 3 verses later, God asked them "Where are you" in Gen 3:9. So death takes two forms - spiritual and physical. It is best understood as being synonymous with 'separation'.

When Adam, the father of all, sinned, he brought spiritual death to all of his descendants. We are born separated spiritually from God. To escape this spiritual separation, Jesus said you must be born again - spiritually.

So in the sense that the natural state of man, spiritually, is separation from God and that began with Adam's sin - Then the sins of the father are visited upon the son.
