Was Stalin an atheist?

A recent PBS documentary on the behind the doors meetings of WWII shows Stalin was a pure atheist and committed genocide on his own people, on the Polish soldiers and allowed mass rape by his soldiers in Germany. A pure atheist biggest fault is not just the disbelief in a just and humane God but the total denial of a hell. Hitler appeared to believe in a God and continued his genocide feeling that if God wanted him to stop, God would stop him. By not believing in the concept of hell one can commit the worse atrocities and genocide since they feel their is no punishment in the future and no place worse that this existence. I would have loved to interview Stalin or Hitler and would ask them their views of hell and why they were atheistic human devils preying on innocent souls.

I would then lecture them that hell is here on earth (which a true atheist should agree on) and the God they do not believe in is watching their actions and unable to always stop their killing. I would also tell them they have no believe in a human soul and their soul is destined for the worst hellish existence they can imagine, 1000X worse that any of their victims. I would finally tell them their stay in hell is only for 7 billion years (earth's eternity) and when our planet is cremated they may have a chance at forgiveness but would not be surprised that their soul gets another 7-10 billion years of hell in their next solar system.
