It is unfortunate WikiAnswers chose to close the answer box to new edits at a time when the answers given were (and therefore still are) completely inadequate and sometimes even inaccurate. Meteorological definitions of the seasons do not follow the solstices and eqinoxes as asserted in one of the "accepted" answers. Also, claims of astronomical seasons as being "official" have no basis in science or law. Finally, the astonomical seasons don't necessarily change "near midnight" as claimed in one of the "accepted" answers. If WikiAnswers can't keep this answer page open for future editing, it should close the page altogether and refer questions about the seasons to the Wikipedia articles on the subject.

Greetings one and all.

The question posed was "What is the first day of Spring 2010?"

The answer put forward on the web page was
"Saturday, March 20 - in the Northern Hemisphere." which is correct albeit imprecise. Similar to saying "the same, but different."

I believe Auckland, Kiritimati, Tokyo and many other locations will be calling it Sunday (it's a calendar thing).

The "Answer" went on to say:
"In the US and Canada: Saturday, March 20, at approximately midnight is the official first day of spring for 2010 in the Northern Hemisphere (Vernal Equinox)."

The designation of "March 20, at approximately midnight" can only be accurate if you are referring to an area near Yangon with its standard time zone of UTC/GMT +6:30 hours (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/)
plus or minus .9 seconds, of course.

Furthermore, Yangon is very, very far away from the “US and Canada”. Yangon, Myanmar to Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. is a distance of 10,910 km/6,779.16 mi (great circle distance) and Yangon, Myanmar to Victoria, Canada is a distance of 11,740 km/7,294.89 mi (great circle distance).

These are the closest U.S. and Canadian capital cities to Burma. So, what precisely was meant by "In the US and Canada: Saturday, March 20, at approximately midnight is the official first day of spring for 2010 in the Northern Hemisphere (Vernal Equinox)."?

Perhaps we can clarify this "Answer" a tad bit. The Vernal Equinox will occur in the Northern Hemisphere at precisely 1332 EDT on 100320 or in layman's terms, at 1:32 PM EDT on Mar 20, 2010 (http://www.erh.noaa.gov/box/equinox.html). This equates as follows.

Saturday, March 20, 2010 Vernal Equinox
1332 EDT Washington, D.C. U.S.A.
0732 HAST Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.
0930 PDT 1030 Victoria, Canada
2400 Yangon, Myanmar
1630 GMT-- 1732 = UDT/GMT

Please, I implore you all; if you want Answers.com to have any credibility whatsoever, thought and accuracy must go in before responses are allowed to spew out.

Semper Fidelis,

Ah Puch
