What percentage of americans are government employed?

So, back to the original question that we failed to answer, does anyone know the answer to the question:
How many Americans total are hired by the government - whether that be state, federal, local, or government contractor?

That's what we want to know. And further, how does that compare historically?

Please, just reveal the truth. Is that black and white enough for you? Thanks, visionpresident.com

If ALL government workers are taken into account which would include teachers and school adminitrators, police, firemen, librarians, state hospital workers, prison employees, all city workers, all county workers including school district employees, then it could be credibly stated that they consist of 13.8 to 15% of the working population.

When we are assaulted with the need to rescue Social Security it seems strange that not a peep is heard about requiring ALL American citizens to pay the social security tax. If that were done and,if by law, NO money from the SS Tax can be used for anything except social security programs then there would be no crisis at all.

That of course is too easy and those we elected to represent us seem loathe to put themselves under the same laws which we are required to obey.

I wonder then if anyone else thinks it is strange that those we elect to pass laws feel no real compunction to abide by same.

There are different types of gov employees. Those that are CONTRACTED receive a paycheck only...no benefits such as medical ins, retirement benefits, etc.

Just because someone is a teacher, does not make them a fed employee. More likely, they are a state employee. Even though there is a mix of fed, state, county, etc dollars given to school districts.

You can not mix apples and oranges, then expect to have a black and white answer.

The title "Government Employee" should apply to anyone that collects a paycheck from any government entity. This should include firefighters, policemen, teachers (anyone connected with or working at a school).

Why exclude education from the total since most of these positions, teacher, administration, and support staff are paid by the taxpayer and qualify as government jobs.

Are the congress, law enforcement etc and their staffs included in the totals?
