- As I recall, the MAC was introduced to the world at the 1984 Olympics with that infamous commercial with a theme from the book "1984".
- Also as I recall, Xerox actually developed the first contemporary GUI in their STAR and Alto workstations in the late 1970s.
- Apple leveraged this work to create a GUI based predecessor to the MAC which was called the LISA (as in Mona Lisa). I recall seeing one of those in use in 1983 (128KB of RAM was big back then)
- "Windows" was much later. Microsoft was stuck in partnership with IBM on OS/2 during most of the 1980s and Windows was on a very low back-burner. I used Windows V2.0 on my NEC MultiSpeed laptop (18 pounds) in 1988. V2.0 was pretty much useless.
- I believe Windows 3.0 came about around 1990 and Windows really became mainstream when V3.1 was released and fixed a bunch of problems that V3.0 had. I believe that was around 1991. Windows 3.11 aka Windows for Workgroups came out a couple of years later. Windows 95 (aka Chicago) came out in 1995, of course. That was another excellent leap in usability & stability.
