Computer is a electro-mechanical machine.
now-a-days the operating systems(like WINDOWS,MAC,LINUX) ,we familier with parallel execution,
we know from where u press the trun on button,
and upto trun off the system,
all operations will done through RAM only,
like :
loading OS from the hardisk, loading runing applications,
copying.........pasting,and all other stuff.
another real time example,
we just editing some program in parallel with playing music and at the same time we r copying an importent data into to the hardisk from the CD-ROM,..like that...,
suppose ,all these three applications r very importent to us, and we have no time to spend on computer more.
then,
then we r not the bussy persons, the RAM and operating system both are bussy persons.eheheheh.......
to do all these stuff, RAM capacity must compatable with that work load.
if not, the performence of the system decreases for a while (becouse overload of data in RAM)the operationg system has to wait for the RAM to respond.

at any cost,if i miss any think,
