- In CA the insurance generally follows the driver. There are never any two cars that are identical as each car has its own vehicle id number and registration. Liability is coverage for bodily injury and/or property damage of the other party not in the vehicle. Medical coverage is for passengers of the insured at fault vehicle, collision coverage is for damage to at fault vehicle and comprehensive is for fire, theft etc.. not covered under collision coverage. U/M and underinsured U/M are medical coverages and can apply several different ways. If you are in an unisured or underinsured vehicle and sustain injuries you can sue your own ins co and have your med bills paid and the ins co will go after the uninsured/underinsured person for repayment or subrogation. Any passenger in your car can do the same to you. So can the not at fault driver of the other vehicle
