Yes you can. Virtually all Bluray players have an analog output which is standard definition. This can be connected to the video input of any television and you will see a standard definition image from a Bluray disc. The quality won't be as good as is on the disc of course but at least the disc will play. It is normally possible to set up the HDMI connector to output a standard definition signal. This is probably not of much use as almost all televisions that have HDMI inputs will also accept high definition signals. It might also be worth pointing out that standard DVDs will also play on a Bluray player. Using the analog output from the player with a standard DVD playing will give the same quality of image as any standard DVD player.

HD DVD is an obsolete format: Toshiba stopped supporting it in February 2008. You still see the players around in discount stores, but no-one is making the discs anymore. The remaining format for high definition DVD is blu ray. To play a HD DVD disc (assuming you have one) you need a HD DVD player (it will also play standard DVDs). For a blu ray disc you need a blu ray player (it will also play standard DVDs). A standard DVD player will not play either HD DVD or blu ray, and cannot be altered so that it will play either (a standard DVD player uses the wrong kind of scanning laser).

Most Bluray players will also down convert the HD signal from a BluRay disc so that it can be viewed on a standard definition television. In this case, of course, the image quality will be the same as any other standard definition signal. To benefit from the high definition signal, an HD television is also required.
