Do Chinese people cook cats? |
Answer
Yes, but a very small percentage of the population. I've been living in China for the past 5½ years so you can pretty much trust me on this.
Most people, especially those living in cities, do not eat cat meat, and find the idea absolutely revolting. Chinese cuisine includes a large number of 'local delicacies', and like other cultures, many of these 'delicacies' are deemed inhuman and/or disgusting.
I think the percentage of its population who eat cat meat is an even smaller percentage than Australians who eat kangaroo meat and crocodile (yes, they do).
Answer
I don't think so. Maybe during the war, when there was nothing to eat, but I don't think so. They mostly ate rice and soup and fish.
Answer
Long after the war many Chinese Restaurants in British Columbia, Canada were fined for serving cat (cut up of course.) Westerners find this cruel and disgusting in their cultural preference and sometimes when they go to another country they tend to carry their common cultural traits with them. Just two months ago (although rare now) another Chinese restaurant was shut right down for serving cat meat.
Chinese have been known to eat dogs (even to this day .. old customs) and just a month ago my husband and I saw a film clip on the news where Chinese had dogs of all breeds (usually mixed breeds) in gunny-sacks ready for slaughter. Of course the western cultures went into a rage over this (my husband and I included.)
Answer
The American Indians often ate dog, usually stewing it. Never forget, the best way to keep meat fresh is to keep it alive until you are going to eat it.
Chinese eating cats is simply another example of cultural differences between the east and the west. Eating cat meat or dog meat can be found in many places in the east other than china. Eating cat or dog meat has nothing to do with customs and it is simply a type of meat that can be found in an eastern meal along with other "normal" meats such as pork, beef, chicken etc. The east, after all is exotic and different even if it is in a way that disagrees with the norms of western culture.
