Yes, an HD television will operate without an HD cable box. Many will now receive HD signals using a built in tuner and will receive SD signals using the tuner as well.

If an HD television is purchased before an upgrade to an HD cable box, the television will accept SD signals from the existing cable box. The quality will still be SD - there is no increase in the resolution just because the television is HD.

When an HD box is obtained, the television will be ready to display HD signals.

Terrestrial television broadcasts are available in most locations and that means a roof mounted aerial will deliver television signals to an LCD television.

In the US and UK (and other countries) all commercial broadcasts are now digital. That means that the television must have a digital tuner. Almost all televisions sold in the last four years or so will have a digital tuner but older televisions may need a set top box to receive the broadcasts.

Alternatively, satellite receivers offer an alternative to cable but are generally a subscription service. Although they avoid the cable, they don't avoid the monthly charges.

Yes of course they do. Most have a setting for antenna and cable and most people live in areas where multiple stations have over the air broadcasts. If your able to have a housetop directional antenna with the ability to turn the antenna for best reception then you can get many stations in highly populated areas. However they would never compare the the choices cable provides

Unless you have something like Dish network or DirecTV, no, there will just be static on your tv.

Cable descramblers are legal to own. However they are not legal to use! They work by intercepting the signals from cable TV companies and cracking them so you can view shows without paying the fee. This is technically theft.

What kind of tv to buy without cable or satellite?

Broadcast TV will be changed to all digital in 2009 so TVs won't work without an adapter. HD and big screens seem to make little sense without cable or satellite. I suggest getting a used TV for now from Freecycle.org. People are just throwing out TVs to switch to HD's. Search " NTSC 2009 TV FCC "
