Let me elaborate a little more than a simple "yes". HD DVDs will, as of November, 2007, only play on a device that has the "HD DVD" logo somewhere on the device. Currently, Toshiba is the biggest manufacturer of HD DVD players; also, the Xbox 360 has a separate, external HD DVD drive that can be purchased for around $180.
PS3s will NOT play HD DVDs. The PS3 is made by Sony, which is devoted to the main competing high definition format to HD DVD, and that is BLU RAY. Unlike the XBOX, the PS3 comes with the Blu-Ray player already installed. Just as Blu-ray Players will not play HD DVDs, the same goes for HD DVD players; they won't play BLU-Ray disks. However, the comany LG has released a dual-format player on the market which will play both HD DVDs and Blu-Rays, and Samsung plans to release their new dual-format players by January of 2008. The LG and Samsung players will each cost around $1000.
One more thing: Both Blu-Ray and HD DVD players WILL play standard DVDs and use an "upconvert" feature to polish the appearance of your standard definition movies so they look almost as good as High definition movies. Music CDs can also be played in MOST high definition players, at least the newer ones. Check with the retailer or manufacturer if CD playback is really important to you.
First, Blu-Rays are not DVDs. People should not get the two mixed up. Blu-Ray discs will only play on Blu-Ray players and those will only work on HDTVs. Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, but DVD players are not compatible with Blu-Ray
All DVDs can play on Blu-Ray players
Only blu-ray disc players will play blu-ray discs. These will also play standard DVDs.
They will only play on Blu-Ray players. But at least they also play CDs and DVDs
Since all Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, they would play like any other player
Yes, blue-ray players can play regular DVDs. However, regular DVD players cannot play Blue-ray DVDs.
The laser that is in most DVD players can also read CDs, which is why most DVD players can play audio CDs. The laser in straight CD players cannot read DVDs.
