Many races of the Orient have an "epicanthal fold" of the upper eyelid which gives the eyes a narrowed or almond-shaped appearance. These folds, along with similar conditions (e.g. caused by Down Syndrome) can increase the "slanted" appearance of the eyes. This is almost always slanted "up" on the outside, which is the stereotypical "Oriental" look used extensively in Hollywood makeup.
