No. Thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) serve in various militaries all over the world. The Church has a support program for it's military members and their families. It publishes special books especially for those in the military and operates several military congregations on bases around the world.

During the time of the draft in the United States, Mormons were exempt from the military only while they were serving as missionaries. Upon their return they were required to complete their military service.

Yes they do. It's the Jehovah Witness religion that believes in conscientious objection. But, Mormons were designated as priests during the Vietnam war so they wouldn't have to serve if they didn't want to - if they were drafted. Some did, some did not. They had a choice.

Yes. They do. I was one of them. During my tour of service I met many Marines that were Mormons. They came from all over the United States and they were in all the ranks (from a Private to a General). They served in all branches of the Armed Forces. Many of my neighbors have served in the military and they have children that are serving in the military. While serving at a duty station on Okinawa members would meet at a chapel and hold services. There were 100's of service members on Okinawa at that time.

Yes. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that serving your nation in the military is a very honorable thing to do, but it is neither encouraged or discouraged. To serve in the military is a personal choice. There are many Mormons in the United States military, and the Mormon church provides chaplains, special supplies (books, manuals, etc), and special congregations for those on active military duty or who are deployed. The church also also has support groups for service members and their families. It is common in Mormon congregations to have a bulletin board in the hallway with images of those serving in the military from that congregation, and congregation members who are deployed are remembered in prayers during worship services.

No. In the United States, citizens are not required to serve in the military, but many Mormons do choose to join and serve their nation. In some nations, a period of military service is required. Mormons are not exempt from this requirement and are willing to serve if necessary. When the United States did have a draft, Mormons were not exempt, but they could receive a temporary deferment to serve as a missionary for the church, then join the military when they came home.

It would be impossible to know, since you are not required to disclose your religion to the military, and you aren't required to disclose your military service to your church. Thousands of Mormons serve in the military of their respective nations around the world.

Yes. There are many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) serving in the armed forces of whatever nation they are citizens of. This has been the case since Mormonism began in 1830. There are even many stories of Mormons fighting against each other in WWII.

The Church has many services to support members of the armed forces and their families, including chaplains and serviceman's congregations. Check out the "Related Links" to learn more.

It depends on their nation's laws. In the United States, mandatory conscription ended in 1973, so of course all current Mormon Missionaries from the US (and every American) is exempt from it. Prior to 1973, many Mormon Missionaries were granted a religious deferrment, which allowed them to serve a mission and then register for the draft upon arriving back home.

Occupational deferments are jobs that allow your Draft Board to defer you from induction into mandatory military service. That is, jobs that keep you from being drafted into the armed forces. In the 1960's, farmers, mathematicians, chemists were exempt.
