Do antique shops always sell real antiques?

There is no legal requiremant for a shop with Antiques above the door to sell REAL antiques and there are many that abuse this across the world. In the UK we are bound by what we write on a receipt for any goods purchased and there have been many court cases where customers have been refunded their money.

In reality here is my advice: Go to a well established shop, ask lots of questions about an item....how old is it, has it been restored, etc and ask for a full receipt describing everything you have been told. The receipt must not contain the word STYLE as this when used with the pre name Georgian, Victorian etc will tell you that the item is not a genuine period one and some kind of copy.

The receipt should record date ie c1860 (circa) description and country of origin.

Finally it is beneficial to build up a relationship with a friendly dealer as they will guide you through the process....and they hope you will come back again having been happy with your purchase !
