Yes, atoms have energy. Atoms have kinetic energy based on thermal energy (the "vibration" of the atom) and also on electron motion. They also have the energy of their mass. This is the energy that would be derived if all of their mass was converted into energy. That's the so-called mass equivalence that Albert Einstein gave us with E=mc2.

Not exactly, however you are on the right track, the Kinetic-Molecular Theory can be summarized by the following statements:

  • Gases consist of large numbers of molecules that are in constant, random motion. (The word molecule is being used here to designate the smallest particle of any gas; some gases, like the noble gases, consist of individual atoms)
  • The combined volume of all the molecules of the gas is negligible relative to the total volume in which the gas is contained.
  • Attractive and repulsive forces between gas molecules are negligible.
  • Energy can be transferred between molecules during collisions, but the average kinetic energy of the molecules does not change with time, as long as the temperature of the gas remains constant. In other words, the collisions are perfectly elastic.
  • The average kinetic energy of the molecules is proportional to the absolute temperature. At any given temperature the molecules of all gases have the same kinetic energy.
