Do cats or dogs make better pets? In: Pets |
Answer
That's really a matter of opinion. Try to talk to friends who have a cat or a dog and ask them about the pros and cons of having a cat or dog. Usually dogs are more energetic, so if you have more time to spend with your pet, you might want a dog.
Answer
I have 2 dogs and a cat. Tootsie is a Bichon Frise and our male Cockapoo "Booker T" and our female cat "The Incredible Molly Browne" (nicknamed: plain old "Molly.") We gave her that long name because she is an incredible cat. Our dogs are her friends and they look after each other and play together. She's the boss of the house (gentle and kind) and gets along well with my friend's dogs. Molly comes camping and fishing with us and is very laid back. She also comes for car rides with us and loves it. She acts like a dog and will steal some of the plastic chew bones and run like the wind to get a rise out of the dogs and the "chase is on." I love both cats and dogs. She loves people and when she generally has her nap in the evening she'll come out to greet anyone who is visiting with us. She's on a "need to know basis." She's a ham in front of the camera. With dogs you can go swimming or for walks, whereas I don't take my cat for a walk unless we are camping and I put her on a leash. If you want pure action then a dog is for you, but either way, both dogs and cats seem to balance out this fast-paced world and make you feel great! They both love you for who you are and don't try to change you.
Answer
There are pros and cons about each, and it also depends on what you are looking for. If you're looking for a pet to cuddle with, you're more likely to find that in a cat then in a dog. If you want a pet to run around with outside, and get exercise with, then a dog would be a better choice. If you're someone that likes to go on vacations a lot, it would be better to get a smaller dog that you could bring with you, rather than a cat where you'd probably have to find a pet-sitter. Both are wonderful, though, and will become an excellent friend of the family.
Answer
I agree with the above. It is personal. What I can say is that whichever you choose, consider getting two. At least for us, they tend to be calmer and less needy when they have a buddy. We currently have three dogs and three cats -- one over our "limit" for each, but the bonus cat and dog were each found treasures that were abandoned near our home and we chose to keep them. Living out in the country, I do have an extra "pro" for both cats and dogs. Cats really help keep mice in check in an older farm house. Dogs (even wimpy ones like ours) do an excellent job of letting you know when someone's around. Good luck!
